THE BRASS LECTERN

The brass lectern was purchased in 1913 with money raised by a Dramatic Society, formed by the young people of the congregation.  It is a replica of the lectern of Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire which had originated at Newstead Abbey. During the dissolution of the monasteries, in the 1530s, important documents were hidden by monks in the brass ball of that lectern.
Our brass eagle weighs one hundredweight and was designed by Frank Pearson, the moulding and finishing being done by White and Sons, 0xford Street, London.
